Forest School

Designed by Make; Make were appointed to undertake the feasibility design of a new education building for an independent school in the South West.

Forest School is a stand-alone new early year’s wing, complete with school hall, flexible classrooms and support spaces. The overarching concept is to create a home-zone in which children are free to wander and explore outside of the immediate classroom. This allows them to begin to gain both responsibility and independence.

A covered cloister unites the different buildings which themselves are articulated by distinct roof forms making the spaces clearly legible within the whole. Passive technologies have been employed to ensure a low energy, operationally cost effective building.
